about

Bandas Sonoras - by Still / Plucknett

Bandas Sonoras is the new collaborative album from Elizabeth Still (Haress) and Dominic Plucknett (Van Coeur). Recorded remotely between May and October 2020, the pair sent home recorded tracks, field recordings, and samples back and forth from their respective homes in Bishops Castle and Brighton, building up song structures to fashion a unique fusion of drone, soundtrack, and avant garde.

The project began when Plucknett sent Still a rough outline for a song, she liked it, added parts, sent it back - and so the process began. Although initially intended as a one song project, ideas quickly emerged and before long they had the seeds for a full length album. The Portuguese titled songs veer through eclectic genres, experimental but grounded in familiar instrumentation and textures. Within the eight album tracks, ideas clash but also support and propel others forward, forging a sonic pallet of earthy wonder. The two grew up in the same Somerset village, played together in early bands, so the collaboration could be considered coming full circle.

To augment the recorded songs, the two artists embarked on a visual project. A SLR camera was mailed between Bishops Castle and Brighton, the film double exposed, capturing juxtaposed landscapes from around Shropshire and Sussex in the same shot. The photographs are used in the album's artwork, and the accompanying limited edition poster. A film, using similar methods, was made as a music video for the album track A Tartaruga (The Turtle).

Elizabeth Still is an artist and musician living in Bishops Castle. Her band Haress released their acclaimed self-titled first record in 2019, with the follow up due in 2022. She is also the co-founder of the celebrated music festival Sin-Eater.

Dominic Plucknett currently lives in Brighton. His band Van Coeur have released three albums, with more music expected in 2022. He also plays guitar in the Sussex band Twenty-One Crows.
